Vish Govindasamy


Vish Govindasamy is the Group Managing Director of Sunshine Holdings PLC (CSE:SUN), a diversified conglomerate, listed in the Colombo Stock Exchange, Sri Lanka.

Prior to moving to the Holdings company, he joined in1997 as the CEO, Watawala Plantations PLC (CSE:WATA), a diversified Plantation Management company set up via a JV with Tata’s, having mature agri assets across Palm Oil, Tea & Rubber with a total extent under management in excess of 12,000 HA and a large workforce in excess of 11,000 people.

He holds a Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering and a MBA from the University of Hartford, USA. Before moving back to Sri Lanka, he held several leadership roles in both Finance and Management, specializing in the Educational Institutions.

At WATA, he was instrumental in turning around the distressed Plantation Company and was credited to having successfully navigated the plantation company through volatile times to become the highest capitalized Regional Plantation Company in the Colombo Stock Exchange (CSE). Further, his vision saw the company move away from being a mono crop to a diversified crop portfolio in Palm Oil & Rubber. Today, in Sri Lanka, WATA is not only the largest producer of Ceylon Black tea but is also the largest producer of Crude Palm Oil (CPO).

Vish’s crowning achievement was in 1998, when he drove his company towards downstream exposure, by successfully entering the branded tea segment in Sri Lanka. Today, with approximately 3 mil kg’s in sales, it enjoys Market Leadership position.

His new avatar as the Group Managing Director of the holding company, since 2009, saw him successfully transform a tightly held family run company into a respected diversified holdings company and more importantly, leverage the TATA relationship to expand the Group’s footprint for market expansion

Vish’s international experience coupled with his innate managerial capability and innovative qualities has enabled him to play key leadership roles in the Private Sector in Sri Lanka and has further cemented his recognition as a dynamic leader in the corporate world.
